Child Language Development and English Language Teaching

The TEYL Certificate introduces key concepts in Teaching English to Young Learners, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), English Language Teaching (ELT), Applied Linguistics, and Second Language Acquisition. Students learn how children develop language skills and how teachers can create engaging, age-appropriate learning environments that support language growth and learner confidence.

Why Specialize in Teaching English to Young Learners?

Teaching children requires different approaches than teaching adults. Young learners have unique cognitive, emotional, social, and developmental characteristics that influence how they learn languages. Effective TEYL teachers understand how to maintain motivation, encourage participation, develop communication skills, and create positive classroom environments that support language learning.

The TEYL Certificate prepares educators to teach:

  • Listening skills
  • Speaking skills
  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills
  • Vocabulary development
  • Grammar
  • Pronunciation
  • Language learning strategies
  • Classroom management
  • Assessment and evaluation

Students also learn about working with parents, educational technology, and resources that support language learning for children and adolescents.

TEYL, TESOL, TEFL and Child Language Development

The Teaching English to Young Learners Certificate complements broader studies in TESOL and TEFL while focusing specifically on teaching children and adolescents. Students examine first and second language acquisition, language teaching methodology, and age-appropriate instructional practices that help young learners succeed in both ESL and EFL environments. The program provides a strong foundation in child language development and practical English language teaching strategies

  • International schools
